Understanding Spin Loft

Spin loft is a 3D angle (technically requiring club path and face angle to be perfectly accurate, but the 2D DL - AoA equation is a very close approximation for straight shots). It is the primary factor determining how much the ball spins and how much energy is transferred (Smash Factor).

Higher spin loft = more spin, lower smash factor (glancing blow). Lower spin loft = less spin, higher smash factor (direct blow). However, if spin loft drops too low (below ~10 degrees), the ball will struggle to lift off the ground.
